Interview with a DisneyBounder
What is your name, age, and where are you from?
-Chelsea Morgan, 20 years old, and I am originally from Parowan, Utah.
Tell us a little about yourself? What came first, your love for Disney or a love for fashion? Do you have a background in fashion?
-Always always always was in love with anything Disney since I was little. I had a passion for art once I hit high school, and I loved looking at the animation that brought the stories to life. I have no background in fashion, but I am a girl, so I guess it kind of goes hand in hand for some of us.
For someone who has no idea what DisneyBounding is, how would you describe it?
I honestly didn't even know what DisneyBounding was when I started bounding. I had this outfit that looked like Ariel from the Little Mermaid; green long skirt, beige tank top, purple half cardigan that wrapped around my chest. I went to the park, and was asked by cast members if I was "DisneyBounding". At the time, I had no idea what that meant and responded "ummmm, no?". They all looked at me weird and said I looked great anyway. I asked someone half way through the day what DisneyBounding was, and realized I was in fact bounding as Ariel. I have been hooked ever since.
If someone asked you what DisneyBounding was, how would you describe it?
If someone asked what bounding was, I would say it is when you wear clothes that look identical or bring to life a Disney or any fictionalized character.
Are you a regular to the Disney Parks?
My husband and I have had annual passes to Walt Disney World for over 2 years now. We normally go to the parks twice a month, sometimes more. It's our date night, has been since we were dating. We would be hanging out with little to do, and make a day at Disney. Our wedding was even inspired by Walt Disney movies.
What is your favorite park to DisneyBound in and why?
It would depend on the bound. If I am bounding as a Star Wars character, I would want to go to Hollywood Studios because more people would recognize who I am portraying. If I am going for more of a classic character, such as my Ariel or Belle bounds, I would normally opt for Magic Kingdom. I had a ton of fun this past year doing different bounds as Anna. I wore her to all 4 parks easily because of the Frozen Summer at Hollywood, and the fact that there is an upcoming Frozen attraction at Epcot, along with a meet in greet and parade with Frozen Characters in Magic Kingdom. I've also wore her to Animal Kingdom since we tend to park hop regularly. My favorite park to bound in is probably Magic Kingdom since the Cast Members are always looking for bounds. They even go as far as to act like I'm the character so I can interact with them, it's my favorite part about bounding!
Do you DisneyBound alone or do others join in with you?
Normally I would just bound by myself, although once I did get my husband to bound with me as Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable when we were dating that was fun. He isn't as spontaneous as I am, so when we make last minute Disney trips, he wont bound unless it's pre-planned.
Have you influenced anyone to start DisneyBounding too?
I am not sure if I have influenced anyone to bound besides my friends from school. They see my pictures on social media, and the crazy Disney lovers fall in love with the idea. Honestly, it's so magical, I'm not sure how you could not want to join in on the fun.
What is the reaction people have when you tell them you DisneyBound?
I'm naturally a little bit of a character, so when people find out I DisneyBound they take it pretty in stride. I guess when you break out into song and dance on the regular and make your own sound effects, DisneyBounding is considered normal. I get a lot of comments like "yup, I can see that."
When you decide on a character to bound, what is the process for your outfit choice?
It depends on the character. Sometimes I'll be going through my closet and find an item I like, then realize I could bound with it and find other pieces to match. I rarely start a bound on things I don't already own. The one exception would be Anna, since I used her for Halloween. I specifically hunted for pieces. Now it makes more sense to plan my bounds, that way I don't have to worry about not having a piece I want.
Do other guests recognize you? Have you had any fun or interesting interactions with guests?
Guests recognize me when I bound all the time! I have interacted with so many, it's crazy! I've even had Cast Members bring kids to me to say "hi". It is against the rules to act like the character unless asked, so I tend to look at Cast Members before doing anything risky. The Cast Members have allowed me to do so much with guests. It's so magical! One time specifically, I was in my Anna bound at Animal kingdom, and a Cast Member asked if I could possibly talk to a family who was eating near us. They had two little girls who thought I was Anna. I said "I wouldn't mind as long as it was okay with him". He brought me over and I basically got to act like the character for a few minutes. It made their day and mine. I told them that when they go to Magic Kingdom the next day, I would be in my full outfit and they could meet me and Elsa. Another time I dressed as her for Halloween and ran around Magic Kingdom. The Cast Member just stared at me, and then shouted out "Anna! I love it!" She told me my bound made her day, which in turn made mine.
Do you seek out to meet the character you are DisneyBounding when in the parks? What are their reactions? Do they recognize what you're doing?
Characters are always on point with my DisneyBounds! It's so fun to talk about the similarities between us! Meet and Greets are the best! I went and met Anna as my Anna Hufflepuff bound, and we had a whole discussion about my outfit and if she could get it at Wandering Oakens Trading Post. I've also been called out in multiple parades by the Frozen characters. Kristoff said I reminded him of someone, but that he might just be over thinking it. Elsa pointed me out to Anna and said, "you know, she looks like you." and Anna said "yeah, and we have the same hair...weird."
What is your favorite DisneyBound you have done? Did you meet them in the park when dressed as your favorite?
My favorite lately is Anna, simply because I have the wig and already act so much like her. I am currently working on several other bounds so I can try out all my favorite characters. I love my Peter Pan bound as well; I had so many complements. I need to find my things for that one and meet Peter! That movie is one of my top favorites, if not my number one.
Do you have a least favorite DisneyBound?
I don't have a least favorite bound, they are all so fun!
What challenges have you come across when DisneyBounding or putting together a bound?
I always have to think to myself if I'm overdoing it, especially with the new rules in the parks. I like to look like the character as much as possible when I bound, so I have to make sure it is not too spot on. The great thing these days about bounding is that you can find almost anything you want for a bound on the internet. I have an addiction to Amazon.com thanks to bounding.
What advice do you have for someone just starting out in DisneyBounding?
I would tell someone new to do what feels right for them. Always push against your comfort zone. If you feel silly, you probably look amazing to a fan! The more accurate you are, the more people will notice you. If standing out isn't your thing, subtle bounds can make you feel special and look the part as well. Over all, just enjoy yourself, be creative, and have fun! The sky is the limit!
